Through critical analysis of texts, images and cultural practices, this course examines Western interpretations of the visual culture of the Islamic world. It proposes to challenge main assumptions that underline standard histories of Islamic art. Discussions will explore issues revolving around the nature of Islamic art, such as aniconism, the “arabesque” and the role of ornament, the development of calligraphy and the arts of the book. It also examines the representation of Islamic art in exhibitions and museums in Europe.
