Extracurricular Activities 2006-2007
Civil Engineering Society (CES)
The Civil Engineering Society (CES) is the society that
brings together the Civil and Environmental Engineering
students at the American University of Beirut and acts
as a bridge connecting the students with the CEE department.
Each year, the 5-member CES cabinet elected at the beginning
of the year organizes and/or sponsors many academic, professional,
and social activities aimed at promoting the interaction
between students and professors both on a professional
and a social level.
The elections of the cabinet members for the academic
year 2006-2007 took place on November 1, 2006 and led
to the election of Nadim Azar (3rd year-President), Roy
Janho (4th year-Vice President), Narine Boulghourdian
(3rd year-Secretary), Omar Abou Kar (2nd year-Treasurer),
and Rami Mansour (1st year-Member at Large). The cabinet
was later aided by Patrick Matter (4th year) and advised
by Dr. Mounir Mabsout.
Professionally, contacts were established to try to set
up an ASCE student chapter in AUB. Academically, AutoCAD
courses were given to 40 students in 10 sessions (20 hours)
with the collaboration of the CEE department, while 2
ROBOT sessions (4 hours) were given to 40 interested students
to introduce them to this powerful tool. In addition,
the Dar el Handasah recruitment day was organized for
4th year and graduate students. CEE students and CES officers
were invited by the CEE Department to attend and give
their opinion about special seminar sessions given by
candidates for joining the expanding CEE faculty in 2007.
Socially, a Halloween Party was co-organized with the
economics department and a barbeque event was co-organized
with the FEA-SRC and the other engineering societies.
Christmas was commemorated with a dinner at Mtayleb Country
Club, while the spring semester was welcomed with a Spring
Start Dinner at the Gefinor Rotana Hotel in the presence
of the chairman and some of the faculty members.
Finally and after the success of the first Civil Summer
Camp in 2006, the 2nd Civil Volunteering Summer Camp 2007
was planned to take place in South Lebanon in June during
the break between the spring and summer terms with 40
students volunteering from 1st and 2nd year. The camp
was postponed to the end of the summer due to the prevailing
instability in the country.
Civil Engineering Gala
The Civil Engineering Gala Dinner is an annual tradition
in the department when the CEE family, students, staff,
faculty, and friends, get together to celebrate the end
of the year. The event is mainly organized by 4th year
students and is an occasion to bid them farewell for graduation.
The event includes special activities and a dinner. The
Gala of 2007 took place in Le Royal Hotel, Debayeh, in
June 2007.
