CEE Participating in 6th FEA Student Conference

Participation in the 6th FEA Student Conference [May 23-24, 2007] by the CEE Department included the presentation of two keynote lectures and eight student papers published in the conference proceedings.

Keynote Lectures

[1] “Rail Infrastructure Development in the Middle East and its Opportunities”
By H.E. Mr. Majid Jawad Al-Jishi (on behalf of CEE)
Former Minister of Public Works and Electricity (Bahrain)
Advisor to the Court of HH the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain
Invited to the Conference and presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award

Abstract: The Middle East Region is in the early stages of a very rapid growth in the rail sector. Ambitious infrastructure projects in passenger, cargo and metro rail transport are planned throughout the Gulf Region. Saudi Arabia has the most ambitious plans including the landmark Saudi Land Bridge project linking Dammam to Jubail and Jeddah with over 1000 km of new track to be constructed, and the Makkah-Madinah Rail Link which will link the two holy cities to the port of Jeddah. Away from Saudi Arabia, and already under construction, is the Dubai Metro System which in the first phase will involve two lines with 70 km of track and 42 stations set for completion in 2009. This system will be further expanded with a third line which is planned for completion by 2011. In addition to the above, there is a study underway investigating the feasibility of setting up a GCC wide rail network within the next five to ten years. Such a network, connecting harbors in the GCC, would significantly boost freight traffic in the Gulf and improve the logistics base of the region. The aforementioned infrastructure work will involve and require significant specialized engineering resources including civil engineers, design engineers, substructure engineers, quantity surveyors, construction managers, project managers and power systems engineers. A number of regional and international engineering consultancy firms have located or are locating in the Middle East in order to cater to these requirements and it is certain that they will be on the lookout for excellent engineering talent from the pool of graduates of the renowned regional engineering universities.

[2] “Why an Engineering Background Offers so Many Opportunities? A Lived Experience”
By H.E. Mr. Adel Hamiyeh (on behalf of CEE)
Former Minister of Public Works, Transport and of Finance (Lebanon)

Invited to the Conference and presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award

Abstract: The talk focused on the evolution of post-engineering opportunities and the sea of change in the applicability of engineering to non-engineering careers. This talk included real life examples of successful people who may have started their careers in engineering but subsequently made their mark in fields as diverse as finance, industry, politics and others.
