Field Trips 2004-2005

 

Field trips were organized by the CEE faculty with the objective of exposing students to the real life experiences in the practical civil engineering world. Visits to the projects, offices, and plants (listed below) were also aimed at enhancing students learning in specific courses.


Sibline Lime Factory, Sibline
Accompanying Faculty: Dr. Bilal Hamad
Course/Class: CIVE 411 (Structures II)/CE 2006 (3rd year students)
Date: November 6, 2004
Aim: To expose students to the various processes and steps involved in the manufacturing of Portland cement.


Beirut Central District (BCD) Reconstruction, Downtown Beirut - SOLIDERE
Facilitator: Mr. Nabil Rached, Press Relation Officer, SOLIDERE
Accompanying Faculty: Drs. Christos Anastasiou and Mounir Mabsout
Course/Class: CIVE 200 (Perspectives in Civil Engineering)/CE 2008 (1st year students)
Dates: April 14 and May 5, 2005 (2 groups)
Aim: To expose students to one of the most significant development projects in Lebanon. The visit included: presentation on the project, numerous construction sites, rehabilitation and historic preservation, the Normandy dump site and recycling plant, breakwater and the marina, and an infrastructure overview.

Course/Class: CIVE 200 (Perspectives in Civil Engineering)/CE 2008 (1st year students)
Dates: April 14 and May 5, 2005 (2 groups)
Aim: To expose students to the design work of various civil engineering departments in a design firm, including structures, transportation and planning, environmental, and computer and IT.


Litani Project, Qaroun, Beqaa

Course/Class:: CE 2006 (4th year students) & CIVE 731 (Earth Dams)/CE Graduate Students
Date: May 20, 2005
Aim: To expose students to the Litani dam and hydro-electric power plant, and to the water resources and irrigation development in the area.


Indevco (Sanita), Beirut

Course/Class: CIVE 421 (Concrete II)/CE 2006 (3rd year students)
Date: May 21, 2005
Aim: To expose students to different design procedures and construction details in a structural steel project.


Four Seasons Hotel, Beirut

Course/Class: CIVE 421 (Concrete II)/CE 2006 (3rd year students)
Date: May 27, 2005
Aim: To expose students to site construction, supervision, and safety issues, phasing of project and construction details. Particular emphasis was on reinforced and prestressed concrete structural elements and systems, were explained and discussed with the project manager and the site engineers.
