The Energy Research Group (ERG) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon was founded in April 2000 as a multi-disciplinary group to lead basic and applied energy research in Lebanon and the region towards a sustainable energy future by advancing related science and engineering, with emphasis on technology transfer and integration with social and economic development in the region. The research specialty areas are energy conversion, renewable energy systems, energy conservation, modelling of thermal systems, heat recovery systems, power systems, energy policy and planning, environmental assessment, solid waste management, and economic and management issues.

Center of Excellence on Energy for Sustainable Development

The ERG has joined the Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD) in November 2003 to become one of GNESD's 20 developing world Centres of Excellence and network partners.

Regional Steering Committee

The ERG, in partnership with the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), the Palestine Polytechnic University (PPU), Birzeit University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Damascus University , in partnership with Florida Solar Energy Center, the NorthWest Energy Education Institute in Oregon, and PRD Consulting in California, has advanced an initiative towards energy efficiency and renewable energy technology to contribute to environmental sustainability in the Middle East. The initiative was sponsored by a grant from the US Department of State. A regional Action Plan was developed at the Regional Collaboration Workshop on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Technology that took place during April 26-30, 2004 at AUB. A Steering Committee for Regional Collaboration is formed representing participating Countries and US technical advisors.
