| The
Charli S. Korban Awards were established in 1991 in
memory of Charli S. Korban, and the first awards were
presented in 1992.
Charli S. Korban was born on January
30, 1950 to Salim T. Korban and Lily Fakhoury Korban
in aleppo, Syria. He completed his high school studies
at Aleppo College in 1967 where he was listed on the
Honor Roll for several years, and passed his baccaleaurate
exams with the second highest score among all students
in Aleppo for that year. He then moved to his native
Lebanon in 1967 and attended the American University
of Beirut where he received his B.S. degree in Electrical
Engineering in 1971, and then completed his M.S. degree
in the same field in 1975. He began his career in 1971
working as a maintenance engineer for Friden-Singer
in Beirut, and then Chief Electrical Engineer at S.A.C.
Contracting Company working in the Areas of design,
site construction comissioning and maintenance where
he was involved with projects at IPC Tripoli Refinery,
Bahrain West Rifaa Military Hospital, and Abu-Dhabi
Housing project. Later he joined P.S.A.I., a Swiss company,
working on a computerized electronic security fencing
project in Iraq, and as a senior consultant for V.H.F.
Communications Network. This was followed by a stint
as a project engineer for Suidan and Associates at Zirku
Island, Abu-Dhabi where he worked on executing plans
for establishing a model city. He then moved on to become
Chief Engineer for the Haifa Steet Development project
with PCMT in Baghdad, Iraq, and worked on this project
from 1981 till 1985. He left this company to establish
his own company, Technical Cell Limited, registered
in the Channel Islands with a main branch in Baghdad,
Iraq. He was the Director and Chief Engineer working
on various major projects until his untimely death on
February 2, 1989.
Through his carre, Charli S. Korban
valued his personal and business relationships. He looked
up to his mentors, and worked very hard to achieve his
career goals and aspirations. He was devoted to his
profession, his friends, and his family. He trusted
and helped others, and was always available to lend
a hand. He treasured his life-long friendships and always
kept in contact. He demonstrated an unrelenting passion
for learning.
He always wanted to strengthen his
knowledge of the everchanging field of electrical engineering
and the advances in high technology. As a result, he
attended several short training courses in Europe, the
U.S., and Japan. He had an unquenching thirst for general
knowledge whether in the arts, architecture, social
behavior, geography, history or politics. He was devoted
to his native country Lebanon and sensitive to the heritage
of the Middle East. He was especially grateful to his
academic training at the American University of Beirut.
He loved his family and people in general. His young
life was full of adventure, ambition, and drive.
The Charli S. Korban Awards
are presented anually to an outstanding undergraduate
student and to an outstanding graduate student, both
majoring in the field of electrical engineering at the
American University of Beirut, so that the spirit, ambition,
and dedication of Charli S. Korban can live on his memory,
and to promote excellence in college education his alma
mater. Each recipient is presented with a certificate
of recognition, a $1,500 cash award and is honored by
adding their name to the Honorary Plaque.
